GOAdFed ADDY Awards (Through Jan. 9). The Greater Ocala Advertising Federation’s call for entries deadline is Friday, Jan. 9. The drop-off station is the Star-Banner. The ADDY Awards promote and support the creative talents of designers and writers from the local advertising community. Holiday Book Drive (Through Jan. 1). Barnes & Noble in Ocala is collecting books from customers and employees for the children of Big Brothers Big Sisters as part of its annual holiday book drive. (352) 854-3999.


Winter Wednesday Centennial Hikes (Jan. 7, 14, 21, 28). Take a hike in the Ocala National Forest with Florida Trail Association guides Rachael & Lou Augspurg during the month of January in celebration of the 100th birthday of the forest. 15th Annual Ford & Mustang Roundup (Jan. 10-11). Time-Line Vietnam Author Talk (Jan. 14). Master Sergeant Ray Bows, U.S. Army (Ret.), discusses his book Time-Line Vietnam: The Tiger That Ate the Firebase, which explore the reasons he volunteered for Vietnam and how his experiences there have affected his life. 2pm in Room C of Ocala’s main library on Silver Springs Boulevard. MLK Jr. Parade and Celebration (Jan. 15). Ocala celebrates the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a parade from the downtown square to the MLK Complex in the morning and activities throughout the day until 5pm. (352) 368-5550.


Williston Hunter Show Series (Jan. 17). The Williston Horse Park on 19th Avenue in Williston is the site of the Williston Horsemans Association Hunter Show Series, which has dates scheduled through April 2009. Bunco for Breast Cancer Charity Fundraiser (Jan. 17). The Bunco Babes of Ocala host its first ever charity fundraiser to benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Hors d’oeuvres provided. Life Imitates Art (Jan. 17). Kirkin O’ The Tartans (Jan. 18). First Presbyterian Church of Ocala celebrates Scottish roots during its annual Kirkin o’ the Tartans celebration. Academic Showcase (Jan. 20). Marion County Gator Club Young & Involved Event (Jan. 21). Young & Involved gives graduates and Gator fans a chance to get together to network, socialize, and cheer on the Gators. Join fellow fans at Barbazon’s Sports Bar & Grill on Hwy. 27 in Ocala on Jan. 21 to cheer on Florida’s basketball team as they take on South Carolina. Literacy Council Spelling Bee (Jan. 23). The Marion County Literacy Council hosts its fifth annual Adult Spelling Bee competition between teams of corporate employees and community groups at the Central Florida Community College’s Klein Conference Center at 5:30pm. Hoggetowne Medieval Faire (Jan. 24-Feb. 1). Step back in time, young and old, to the magical medieval ages during this 23rd annual event at the Alachua County Fairgrounds in Gainesville. Enjoy a mounted knight’s joust, street jugglers, dancers, minstrels playing, and a bustling marketplace. 10am-6pm on Saturdays and Sundays; 9:30am-3:00pm on Friday. $12 for adults; $6 for children; free for kids under 5. Ocala Camellia Show (Jan. 24-25). Beauties in bloom! The Ocala Camellia Society’s annual show, featuring some 2,000 varieties of the flower, is one of Marion County’s most beautiful traditions. Head to the Pioneer Garden Club at the Appleton Cultural Complex just to view the pretty blooms or enter your own on Jan. 24 between 7-10am. The show will be open 2-5pm on Saturday and 1-4pm on Sunday. Admission is free. (352) 595-3365.


Murder Mystery Dinner (Jan. 24). It’s a classic whodunit murder mystery at Ocala’s Seven Sisters Inn. The evening begins with appetizers at 6:45pm followed by a multi-course dinner and the solving of the mystery. $55 per person, excluding tax and gratuity. (352) 867-1170.


Flashback Gala (Jan. 31). Tickets for last year’s Flashback Gala at the University of Florida’s Phillips Center sold out quickly, so purchase yours today. Ocala Marathon (Feb. 1). Have you heard? The Ocala Marathon is now a Boston Marathon qualifier. The race starts at 7am at Boyd Marketplace on 19th Avenue Road. HITS Horse Shows (Feb. 3-March 15). Ocala’s HITS (Horse Shows in the Sun) will take place from Feb. 3 to March 15, with the Ocala Winter Finals held March 3-8 and a special Ocala Winter Celebration held March 10-15. Father-Daughter Valentine’s Dance (Feb. 6). Fathers and daughters (ages 3-12) are invited to enjoy a special Valentine’s Day-themed evening together at the Holiday Inn and Suites ballroom, sponsored by the Philanthropic Educational Organization. A Gala on the Wild Side (Feb. 28). “A Gala on the Wild Side” is the theme for the Ocala Royal Dames’ 23rd Annual Tiara Ball, the non-profit group’s signature fundraiser for cancer research and education. Held at the Ocala Hilton, the evening will feature dinner, dancing, music by Bob Brouillard, live and silent auctions, and a presentation of the 2009 debutantes and four Royal Knights. MUSEUMS/EXHIBITS


Momentum: Contemporary Art from the Harn Collection (Through May 12). This exhibit, which includes works from the museum’s collection as well as significant loans, explores the notion of time as expressed in contemporary art, focusing on enduring traditions, changing cultures, and radical breaks. Works include paintings by Kehinde Wiley, sculpture by Chul-Hyun Ahn, and video by Yael Bartana. Harn Museum, Gainesville. (352) 392-9826.


Promises of Paradise: Staging Mid-Century Miami (Through Jan. 25). A groundbreaking exhibition devoted to the architects, designers, and urban planners of mid-20th century Miami and their contributions to American Modernism. The exhibit showcases some of South Florida’s most talented and innovative designers, including Alfred Browning Parker, Morris Lapidus, George Farkas, Frederick Rank, and Kay Pancoast. Winslow Homer in America (Through Jan. 18). Ocala’s Appleton Museum concludes its “Home is Where the Art Is” fall theme with this inspiring exhibit of one of the most celebrated American artists of the 19th century, featuring 142 wood engravings by Winslow Homer produced over a period of nearly 30 years. Grossology: The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body (Through Jan. 11). Ever wondered how fast air exits your nose during a sneeze? Or how clean your saliva is? The Florida Museum of Natural History in Gainesville has the answers and a slew of other facts about the human body in this enlightening (and sometimes gross) exhibit the whole family can enjoy. Santos: Devotional Folk Art of Puerto Rico (Jan. 20-Feb. 20). The spiritual and aesthetic figure carvings featured in this exhibit at the Webber Conference Center at Central Florida Community College are created by contemporary artisans, or santeros, in Puerto Rico. These carvings depict wooden saints that are used in the Christian tradition as “bridges to God.” Reception will be held Jan. 20, 4:30-6:30pm. www.Cf.edu or (352) 873-5809.


White Alligators Exhibit (Ongoing). Two reptile stars are making a big splash at Silver Springs. The amusement park acquired a pair of rare, three-foot-long albino alligators for a brand new, permanent exhibit now on display. Moonlight and Magnolias (Jan. 8-18). For once, everyone in Hollywood agrees on one thing: Gone With The Wind is going to be a huge flop. Weeks behind in shooting and deep in debt, producer David O. Selznick hires director Victor Fleming and scriptwriter Ben Hecht to rewrite the screenplay. In just five days, living on peanuts and bananas, the two deliver one of the greatest films of all time. Rod Stewart Tribute (Jan. 10). Dublin Philharmonic Orchestra (Jan. 10). In its first tour of the United States, the famed Dublin Philharmonic Orchestra—founded in the mid-1800s—will make a stop at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre in Orlando on Jan. 10 at 8pm. Pianist David Leighton (Jan. 10). Tom, Dick, and Harry (Jan. 28-Feb. 8). In this hilarious story of three brothers, Tom and his wife are about to adopt a baby. His brothers are anxious to help make a good impression on the woman from the agency who has arrived to check on the prospective parents. Unfortunately, Dick who has stashed boxes of brandy and cigarettes in the house, and Harry, who is in possession of a cadaver he is planning to sell illegally to a medical school, fail miserably. Budapest Festival Orchestra (Jan. 31). In less than two decades, the Budapest Festival Orchestra has become one of the world’s most traveled and popular ensembles. Collin Raye and Restless Heart (Jan. 31). Two big-time country acts are coming to Ocala’s Silver Springs at the end of the month. The Jungle Book (Jan. 31).
