Chris Sterner of Huffman Builders, one of the nation’s premier healthcare developers and builders, is easing physicians’ headaches—one well-built medical office at a time.

“Our phones don’t shut off at five. You have to be available when you specialize in medical development and construction,” says the owner of Huffman Builders of Central Florida. “Doctors are available early in the morning and late at night. Quite a few times, I’ll have business meetings at five or six in the morning as well as 10, 11 o’clock at night.”
As the head of the local arm of Huffman Builders—a nationwide developer of medical offices with 33 years of experience and two million square feet of completed space—Chris is always just a phone call away from his clients, which include dentists, optometrists, and chiropractors, just to name a few. Huffman Builders has built radiation oncology centers, ambulatory surgery centers, endoscopic centers, renal dialysis centers, and small specialty hospitals, and with such specialized construction under his direction, Chris is often out of the office.
“I’m not sitting in a big office somewhere,” he says with a chuckle. “I work out of my truck. I’m out in the field every day.”
The Huffman difference, however, begins long before ground is ever broken.
The company provides a complete turnkey operation for physicians, starting with the financial and architectural planning phases. Huffman Builders regularly secures between 95- and 100- percent financing for its clients. After careful analysis of the project’s economic and logistic parameters, construction begins with Chris at the helm. Once completed, the building is given an expert interior finish, and a complimentary marketing campaign is launched for the practice. Currently, Huffman Builders of Central Florida has several projects in the works, from North Port and The Villages to the south to locations right here in Ocala.
“There are a lot of details to medical development and construction that many residential and commercial contractors can’t tackle,” Chris states. “We know what needs to be done for each specialty, and our pricing is extremely competitive. We cut the surprises down, which take time and slow construction, and there are no up-charges once construction starts.”
In addition to honest pricing, the centrality of the Huffman business model means physicians work solely with Chris, Co-owner Donna Haley, and their team. The convenience and ease for physicians is immeasurable.
“The doctor deals directly with us,” Chris says. “They don’t have to go out and put deposits down; hire their own engineers, architects, designers. There are so few builders around the country that do everything we do. We always go the extra mile.”
