Float On

August 6 marks National Root Beer Float Day, a celebration of the famous ice cream soda.

Although the exact origin of the root beer float is unknown, many believe it was invented by Frank J. Wisner in a mining town in Colorado. After peering out one night at the full moon hanging over nearby Cow Mountain, he was inspired to combine a scoop of vanilla ice cream with the soda waters he served at his bar. Wisner himself loved the beverage—and so did the children in the town who continued to come back for more. Since its creation, the root beer float has become the favorite of many.
