Ask The Expert: Art

John Coldwell

Art is important to any home, but I feel daunted by all the styles available. What should I focus on when buying a piece?

Art is about what makes you feel good. It’s not always about matching the sofa. That said, your décor will dictate the art. A formal European styling lends itself to images of Tuscany and the Mediterranean. A casual Florida look will be complemented by beach scenes and palm trees.

What if I buy something from your gallery and then discover it’s not right for my house?

It’s not always easy to imagine what a piece will look like in your home, so we will bring selections to you, together with frame samples, and hang them on your walls to help you determine if they’re right.

What’s the difference between giclees and lithographs? Which is better?

A lithograph is a paper print and needs to be framed under glass. Collectible signed and numbered limited edition pieces are issued as paper prints and usually are quite affordable. A “giclee” is a copy of the original artwork printed on canvas paper and treated with a final UV protection barrier. Giclees are also generally signed and numbered limited editions and collectible. They have a far better appearance and, without the glass, can be seen more clearly. Giclees cost more to purchase but less to frame.

Recently I noticed an old painting in my home was damaged. What are my options? Should I just get rid of it?

I would not recommend consigning it to the trash straight away. We have professionals on hand who can do valuations. If you like the piece, bring it in and we’ll determine if it’s salvageable.

Do you sell local artists’ work?

Yes, we feature a number of local artists, including Nick Martinez and Lynn Wade who specialize in horses, portrait artist Dale Henry, and Bob Boynton who paints the frame, not the picture.

I’m undecided about where to shop for my next piece. How are you different from other art galleries in town?

The King’s Gallery is dedicated to offering art that suits all tastes and budgets and that says something about you rather than just fills a space. We offer fun prints, decorative oils, oil tapestries, collectible prints, giclees, originals, and special-order pieces.

Are you offering any specials to promote your new location?

Yes, now through April 30, when you mention this column, you’ll receive 25 percent off your order. We also offer a “Royal Referral” program. You receive a $25 Simon Mall gift credit card for every contact who presents our Royal Referral business card with your name on it. It’s our way of saying thank you to our customers.
