Dishing Up Delicious

When Dish Fine Grocer and Eatsopened late last year, patrons quickly made it their go-to source for fresh, all-natural, local food items. Partners Greg Mullen and Mary Gary believed their idea for a European-style market in Ocala would be well-received. They were right on the money.

Customers have made Dish a favorite spot not only for its remarkable variety in organic meat, product and pantry items, but also for the delicious and ever-changing array of prepared dishes.

Cozy, comfortable seating makes it easy to pull up a chair and relax as you enjoy one of the signature crab cakes, a hearty serving of decadent four-cheese macaroni and cheese or a tasty helping of one of the many sides and salads.

“Our menu is consistently changing, depending on what’s available,” says Chef Mullen, who handles the majority of the cooking duties. “There’s no fixed menu, but our customers have learned to love it because there’s always something fresh and different.”

Dish relies on an extensive group of trusted farmers and purveyors when it comes to offering healthful products that are all natural and organic whenever possible. Kobe beef, known for it leanness and rich flavor, is always on hand, but more exotic fare is also available.

“We’ve had people ask for elk, ostrich and whatever they’re looking for, we can get because we’re a custom provisioning house,” notes Mullen. “If someone wants antelope from West Texas, we can get it for them.”

That “make it happen” attitude applies to other items as well. The shelves are well-stocked with fresh produce and grocery supplies that make it easy to whip up a meal.

“We have all the pantry essentials; our pantry is your pantry,” says Mullen. “Many of our customers don’t realize that even if they don’t see what they want on the shelves, we may have it in the back, so just ask.”

And by the way, Dish is definitely the place to wrap up your Christmas shopping for the foodies on your list. The wine selection is top quality, targets every budget and includes unusual vintages produced in small lots. For the man interested in outdoor cooking, check out the specialty woods as well as the highly popular Big Green Egg ceramic smoker and grill. Of course, if you’re uncertain, a gift certificate always solves the problem.

Dish usually features at least one special event per week and hosts cooking classes in its expansive demonstration kitchen, so call to see what’s on the schedule. And don’t forget to plan ahead and order your custom Christmas dinner package. You can be certain that whatever you choose, the resulting meal will be as flavorful, fresh and local as it comes.
