TJ Wade jokes that she left Ocala to attend Mardi Gras in New Orleans and didn’t return until eight years later. Lucky break for the animal lovers of Central Florida! While in New Orleans, TJ learned the trade of animal grooming.
“I grew up in a house full of animals and swore I would find a different career path,” she says. “But here I am 27 years later, still working with animals.”
As the owner of Groomingdales, a popular Ocala grooming facility opened in 1998, TJ ensures that area pets are primped and pampered. Consider Groomingdales a pet version of an upscale salon, complete with top-of-the-line products.
“We do it all,” TJ says. “Manicures, pedicures, ear cleaning, and scissor cuts are just a handful of the services we offer.”
The company cares for every kind of dog and cat. Through the years TJ has worked for a variety of talented veterinarians and groomers and has made a point of surrounding herself with the best in the business.
“I consider my staff to be my family,” she says. “Often we develop close relationships with our clientele, many of whom have become long-time friends.”
TJ says that just like humans, each dog and cat she works with has its own personality quirks. She compares running a pet salon to running a daycare—complete with potty breaks, meltdowns, and snack times.
“The animals are really a lot of fun to be around,” she says. “As a matter of fact, when I left the grooming business for two years to assist my husband, Mark, with Kenzico Construction, I really missed the animals. I ended up going back to grooming.”
That deep-seeded love for animals is what makes Groomingdales such a success.
“We don’t skimp on anything,” TJ says. “And our salon is exceptionally sanitary and clean. We are very thorough with each animal, and our groomers and assistants go from head to toe with each one.”
TJ also prides herself on educating her clients.
“Florida weather and outdoor conditions can wreak havoc on a pet’s skin,” she says. “We keep our clients aware of what’s out there. That’s one reason regular groomings play an important role in keeping your pet healthy and safe.”
