Multi-Sensory Environments For Person-First Care

Paddock Ridge is Ocala’s newest community for innovative memory care.

Asensory room is a safe place where people living with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia can safely explore and stimulate their senses. The equipment in these rooms provides gentle stimulation of sight, sound, touch, smell and movement in a controlled way. It can be used for calming or stimulating, depending on the needs of a loved one. Sensory stimulation is intended to bring enjoyment to seniors with the disease, reduce anxiety and depression, and increase social interaction. Sensory rooms can also enhance feelings of comfort and well-being, relieve stress and pain, and maximize a person’s potential to focus, which can help improve communication and memory.

In addition to providing these calming, stress-relieving benefits, the multi-sensory environment equipment employed by the team at Paddock Ridge is designed to help residents who are challenged in these areas: oversensitivity to touch, movement, sight or sound; under-reactivity to sensory stimulation; an unusually high or low level of activity; problems with balance or coordination; and difficulty with the activities of daily living.

Shane Potter, Executive Director

The team also offers activities linked to interests the resident had prior to dementia to help build a connection to everyday life. This may involve reading, talking, gentle hand massage, shifting to an outdoor environment, or introducing tactile objects familiar from a former time in the resident’s life, such as sand or seashells. Multi-sensory environments like the sensory room at Paddock Ridge have been shown to improve social abilities, overall happiness and the number of depressive symptoms exhibited. It’s an example of the new, inventive approach to Alzheimer’s/ dementia care at Paddock Ridge.

Paddock Ridge, Ocala’s newest and most innovative community serving memory care and assisted living residents, is the flagship property of locally owned Prospéra Communities. It’s now accepting reservations with limited availability in the community’s memory care neighborhoods.
